May is ALS Awareness Month

ALS Awareness Month is in May

But I wanted to feature this special portrait today because ALS Awareness month is every month. This portrait is of Kim Casey Fradd and her beloved brother Steve, whom she lost to ALS a number of years ago. Kim’s husband Colin commissioned this painting from me in 2016. It is painted in acrylics on canvas and is probably about 18″ x 24″

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as motor neurone disease or Lou Gehrig’s disease in the United States, is a rare, terminal neurodegenerative disorder that results in the progressive loss of both upper and lower motor neurons that normally control voluntary muscle contraction. ALS is the most common form of the motor neuron diseases. ALS often presents in its early stages with gradual muscle stiffness, twitches, weakness, and wasting. Wikipedia

Many of us have read the book, Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom or seen the movie of the same name about a series of visits Albom made to his former Brandeis University sociology professor, Morrie Schwartz, as Schwartz was dying from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Although it is supposed to be a rare disease, I keep hearing of people who have it, or of people who know people who have it. It is a heartbreaker.

Arlo, Buster & Penny

This pet portrait is entitled “Arlo, Buster and Penny at Blue Ridge Shores” and is my most recently completed portrait. It was commissioned by Leslee and Dan Kelly to commemorate their three beloved pups who have passed over the Rainbow Bridge. In life these pups never knew each other, but each in their time was a precious companion to the Kellys. This painting was a challenge to me because I had to meld together different photographs to create a scene in which all the personalities coexist in time and space: Penny, the farthest back, loved her ball; Buster, in the middle, loved his frisbee; and Arlo, in front, loved to ride on the boat. Plus, there was the personality of the boat, and the personality of the shore!! Here are some of the photos I had to work with:

The bottom line is that there was a happy ending. The Kellys

both told me they loved the pet portrait, and that the painting was exactly

what they were hoping for! And that makes me happy!

SYDNEY the Black Cat Pet Portrait

Sydney was a beloved member of the Steindl family who wanted to remember her for always as the special being she was. The family submitted a number of photos and the first one I went with showed Sydney’s marvelous pink tongue! But the family voted for no tongue, and with a few adjustments they were very happy with the painting they got, which is a combination of the two photos show here! The loving hand belongs to the marvelously talented Steindl daughter,Emily!

Although a black cat pet portrait is harder to paint, this one seems to be a big success!! I’m still fond of that pink tongue!!

The Haggard Five

Here is another painting in which I had to combine a bunch of photos to put all of these beautiful beings together in one painting so that they would look like they were just casually photographed together!! The image of each precious being in this painting was taken from a separate photo, so this one painting was made consulting FIVE different photos!! There have been a lot of changes since this painting was made just a short year ago! Virginia the Treeing Walker Coon Hound has crossed the rainbow bridge and gone to her heavenly reward, and Greg the Great Dane now towers over Cosmo, and can now eat off the kitchen counter if they’d let him!! But Cosmo and the kitties, Moon and Sun, along with their baby brother Greg are their usual sweet loving selves and are all looking forward to their next chapter in life with the Haggards!! I thought I invented Rainbow Trees!

PEARL

I am starting a blog. I paid hard-earned cash to web designers to write blogs for my website that would contain the key words that would bring you to my website, but those blogs were all baloney and had nothing to do with who I am or what my art is about. Its time to get real.

I want to show you my latest pet portrait and how it was done. It was commissioned by Kevin, a holistic massage therapist from Georgia, who has a young friend whose cat, Pearl, died suddenly. They don’t know why Pearl died, but she is greatly missed. Kevin saw my ad in a trade magazine and contacted me to do a painting of Pearl to give to his young friend. He sent me several photos to work from. Of these five photos, the one that spoke the loudest to me was # 1– Pearl stretched out on the bed on top of the homework— but it was her giant front patti-paws that captured my sense of Pearl. With her eyes closed in that photo, I didn’t want there to be any question of her state of consciousness, so I referred to her beautiful face in photos 3 + 4 to open her eyes. Then, to make sure she was in her familiar surroundings, I painted the bedspread and the notebook from photo 2.

When I sent Kevin a digital copy, he said he loved it. I hope his young friend will too, but I haven’t heard back because I just shipped it today! Scroll down to see the finished “Pearl.”
